Here is a short video of hull # 1 being lifted out of the mold (if you can’t see the video, please click here).

In this image you can get a sense of the beam of this new model. These two associates are building the structure around the IGU (Internal Glass Unit) mold.

Meanwhile, work continues on the plug finish for the deck mold. This essential part of the process ensures a high quality part with first rate surface finish from the finished mold.

The Back Cove 41 will launch in February 2014. Please follow us throughout the entire build process as the first boat goes from the drawing board to the water.

The photo above shows the freshly sprayed “Flag Blue” gel coat on the hull mold surface and prior to the fiberglass being applied. Did you know 90% of Back Cove hulls are Flag Blue?

All fiberglass materials, core and stringers are “dry stacked” and ready for VIP (Vacuum Infused Process).

The entire assembly is covered with a plastic sheet and sealed. The next step is to install resin feed (liquid), lines and vacuum system (including perimeter vacuum) per designed layout. The vacuum removes the air and excess resin from the laminates, ensures a proper resin to fiber ratio and makes the part stronger and lighter. The result is remarkable; the VIP process produces significantly less waste and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).

Once the stack is fully infused, the resin cures while under the pressure. A typical Back Cove hull takes about three hours to harden.

Back Cove associates generally leave the part in the mold overnight to fully cure. The next day, the associates remove plastic bag, resin supply & vacuum plumbing.

In our next blog, we will show pictures of the new hull being removed from the mold so be sure to sign up to receive regular blog posts!

Next week the lamination department will start working on the mold…and a few weeks later the first hull will be built! In February 2014 you can lay your eyes on the first hull of the Back Cove 41. It’s debut will be at the Miami Boat Show in February!

Unlike some of our recent tooling projects we will be building the actual molds at Back Cove as opposed to receiving fully finished molds from our suppliers. This gives us full control of the quality of mold building process. Our hull plug has been at the shop now for a few weeks and the progress here is very good.

The Back Cove 41 project is underway!

BC_41

The Back Cove 41 hull plug is ready! We’re officially moving forward. Here are five fun facts about our newest model. The Back Cove 41:

  1. is the largest Back Cove to date
  1. will be fitted with an efficient single Cummins 600hp diesel engine.
  1. will also be equipped with bow and stern thrusters
  1. a generator set, reverse cycle heat and air conditioning systems are standard.
  1. is the first Back Cove model with a side deck door at the helm.  It will be a fantastic ‘Dutch’ door with the upper (window) half opening independently from the molded lower half allowing owners to cruise with just the top half pulling in all that fresh air, or with the entire door fully open.  This unique door system is being developed specifically for the BC41, and will provide a clear advantage when mooring or anchor handling.

Kevin Burns, Vice President of Design and Product Development says, “The 41 was conceived from the onset to serve as the flagship of the Back Cove fleet. Clean, purposeful lines and naturally pleasing proportions dominate the profile and are supported by serious attention to the sculpted details that set today’s Back Coves apart from their peers.”

Check back soon to see more updates on the production of the Back Cove 41, ready for your viewing pleasure at the Miami Boat Show (February 2014).
