Back Cove Blog
If you read this blog you’re probably pretty enthusiastic about boating. You are more than just a casual participant and you probably love pretty boats. There are two real boat shows in this world. (well maybe three if you count Genoa:-) ) One is the Maine Boatbuilders Show which takes place in March and the other is the Maine Boats Homes and Harbors show which takes place this coming weekend in Rockland, Maine. If you like pretty boats then this show is for you.
At this show you can talk to the craftspeoplewho build spectacular wooden canoes and the designers and builders of large sail and motoryachts and the builders of everything in between. It’s cool and it is a lot of fun. You may even want to take in the boatyard dog contest which is always a hoot.
We’ll be there with the Sabre 40 and the Sabre 52 and the Back Cove 33 and 37. If you come to the show please drop by and say hello.

I just had an email from a client who was fortunate to have spent time recently cruising in the Greek islands with his family. On board a charter their captain suggested the port of Kyparissi in Pelloponese for an afternoon swim. To their surprise they found a Back Cove 33 docked at the town pier and took some pictures for me to post on our blog.
As we expand our network of dealers to foreign markets we have appointed Planatech of Athens as our dealer for Greece. Last winter I had a chance to visit with them and work at the boat show in Athens but from the look of these images perhaps I should go back and sea trial the boat in the Greek islands. It looks fantastic doesn’t it?

Back Cove 37 ‘s are now finding their way to all corners of the globe (literally). While hull #4 was on a freighter bound for Sydney, Australia, hull #5 was being commissioned in Monaco. Hull 6 is now being enjoyed by their owners Tracy and Chuck Nichols of San Diego, California seen here at the commissioning party for EZ RIDER. The event was timed to coincide with the July 4th weekend activities and as you can see, the Nichols have plenty of friends who gathered for the occasion at the San Diego Yacht Club
Congratulations and thank you to Tracy and Chuck

I spend a lot of time on the water in my Back Cove 33 Paper Moon and I am always surprised to find another great anchorage or destination along our Maine coastline. Last weekend we went to Boothbay Harbor for Independence Day celebrations and fireworks and enjoyed spending time with our Australian Back Cove Importer Jed Elderkin, his wife Evie and their two lovely children. The morning after we set a course for Damariscove Island with our family aboard and what a surprise this place turned out to be.
Under the stewardship of the Nature Conservancy, Damariscove is perhaps one of the best examples of how preservation and conservation can benefit all of us. So, when you are passing Boothbay don’t be lured into the bright lights of town too quickly.Set your course for this magical Island and you’ll discover something truly unique.

Summer and the boating season are about 18 weeks long in Northern New England. May 15th through mid-September is about as good as it gets. We all try to stretch it earlier or later but let’s call it 18 weeks for my purposes here. (In fact I tell all of the boaters from out-of-state that September and October get really cold so they leave and I have the ocean to myself on those spectacular fall days)
So here we are in mid-June and Tiger Woods is slogging around Bethpage Black trying to find his golf ball and I am looking out the office window at a never ending rain. I am discouraged until my phone rings and it’s a call I have been expecting. On the line is Jed Elderkin. Jed is the owner of E Marine Australia and he’s a very successful importer of Back Cove boats down under. Jed has placed Back Coves all over Australia and recently delivered one to Tasmania and another to the city of my birth, Adelaide, South Australia.
Jed (Jedediah actually) and his wife Evie are from Maine and have returned home for a visit with family. Now you would think that if we are going to get together we would not go boating. But quite the contrary. On Saturday I am heading for Robinhood, Maine and will meet them for dinner there. Rain you say? To heck with the weather, I have a Back Cove 33 with an enclosed helm deck and days like this are why we keep boating while all those sporty white things are tied to the dock. They would get wet if they went out and we don’t care. In fact having a few less boats on the water is OK with me.
But getting out on the water and meeting our good friends for dinner will make it a sunny day. Let it rain and hopefully Tiger will make some putts.
Happy Father’s Day to all you Dads
