Mechanical spaces

Back Cove 37 hull #1 will get it's engine installed this week. The 600 hp Cummins QSC 8.3 engine is a beautiful "piece of kit" (an English expression that I like a lot). Unique to the Back Cove 37 is a separate engine compartment and mechanical space. In her engine room the operator will find the engine, Onan 9.0Kw gen set, marine gear, shaft seal, Racor filters for gen set and main engine and two water tanks one on either side of the main engine. Batteries will also be located here. This space is accessed by the lifting helm deck cabin sole which hinges from a point just aft of the helm seats. An emergency egress hatch in the forward bulkhead (*) would permit someone to exit in front of the helm chairs.

All other systems components are found in a mechanical space between the main engine room and the cabins. Access to thisspaces is via a hatch in the galley sole. Within this space are the water, macerator and air conditioning pumps, waste tank and hot water heater.

In front of the two helm chairs (*) there is a lifting hatch in the sole and within this area is a storage compartment for additional galley stores and pantry items.

Clever. Clean, Quiet.

Indoor-outdoor connected spaces

Opening up interior spaces to the outdoors is commonplace in commercial and residential architecture today and that same phenomenon is now brought to boating with the advent of new door systems.

Our goal on the Back Cove 37 has always been to provide a living space in the salon that is surrounded by windows to give the sense of the outdoors while living in the climate controlled comfort of an interior space. But as we boater's know, when the weather is fair the outside is where we often want to be. Connecting indoor and outdoor spaces can be cleverly done with the right choice of door systems and the right choice has been made with this new design.

It's not hard to imagine a warm afternoon or evening with family and friends enjoying the comfort of these spaces.

The Big Bed Theory

My personal concept for the perfect boat (or as perfect as any boat can be at least) is to create a beautiful exterior profile, design an efficient running surface and complete the design with a big comfortable master berth. After all, why should this bed be any less comfortable than the one you have in your home? Do these things and the world will beat a path to your door (?)

This may sound a little too simple and believe me it's not any easy task to put a great design in the water. But our designer Kevin Burns has done it and here's a rendering of the forward master for you to check out. Hull #1 of the new Back Cove 37 has been infused and it's on the line. Jet Dock Systems : Keeping Big Boats Dry

Jetdock1

Nope, I didn't think it was possible either.  Check out these pictures of the Back Cove 29 staying high and dry on the Jet Dock System in Beaufort South Carolina.  With a 31'  total LOA, a 10' 5" beam and 10,000 lbs displacement, this is a pretty serious system.   Definitively worth a second look if you think it couldn't be done with your boatJetdock2

Back Cove 37 goes into production

This week we will mold the hull of the first Back Cove 37. The process we are going to use is new to our boats but not new to us as a company. For years we infused boats for other boat builders, now we are going to use this technique for our own parts.

Infusion is a molding technique where all of the fiberglass and coring materials are loaded into the mold dry. Then a plastic bag is laid over the top of the materials and sealed along it's edges. Once fully prepared ,resin is sucked into the bag and "infuses" itself into the fiberglass. When the process is complete the part has better strength characteristics and tends to weigh less. From the technicians and environmental point of view it's much cleaner too.

Over the next two to three months we'll show you the first Back Cove 37 going from start to sea trial. Stay tuned
